JULY 2006 ROUNDABOUT ARTICLE by R.O.B.

R.O.B. NEWSFLASH

GREEN WASTE COLLECTIONS

Many have rung up to inquire about this. We are pleased to inform householders that this new service will commence on 31 July 2006. We have a new system for collections. This is not an annual subscription but is still a prepayment system that should meet the different needs of different people.
This is how the new system works:

1. You will need to show a Green Waste Sticker on your bag if you want the bag to be emptied.
2. Your bag should normally be ROB’s old green-coloured plastic bag (formerly used for recycling paper) – see picture. Place the Sticker firmly anywhere on the bag, choose a permanent spot – future Stickers will go here, on top of old ones. Please ring up for free delivery of spare ROB bags – 01623 863955.

3. You must ring us before 9.00 am on Thursday if you wish the bag to be emptied that day. Collection day is Thursday. Ring a few days before if you know – leave a clear message on the answerphone giving your name, address and phone no., and state the Thursday (give date) you want a collection.

To get a supply of Green Waste Stickers, please purchase them from:

  1. ROB - drop in personally at Unit 183-184 Road E, or send us a cheque – see amount below. Or at any post office, as follows:
  2. New Ollerton Forest Road P.O.,
  3. Ollerton Village P.O.,
  4. Boughton P.O.,
  5. Walesby P.O.

Text Box: A strip of 4 stickers costs £3.50. Single stickers are £1.00 each.

It is recommended that you immediately write your name and address on the Sticker.

There is a new procedure for bringing green waste to ROB at Unit 183:
1. Ring us first on 01623 863955.
2. We will give you a time to arrive.
3. Call at the office to pay (same charges as collected by ROB apply, trailer loads are pro rata estimated).
4. Unload the green waste in the location that will be shown to you – the location is most important to avoid being mistaken for flytipping.

PLEASE NOTE it is an offence to dump any bags of green waste and rubbish on the forecourt of our unit (maximum fine for flytipping is £50,000 which is enforceable by the Environment Agency and Newark & Sherwood District Council).

NB. By the same token, anyone bringing glass, textiles, household items, paper or cardboard to us MUST FIRST report to the office – unless there are labelled receptacles to receive these materials. Thank you.

ROB NEEDS YOUR TEXTILES

Article by Steph Read and the textiles team.

Thought you might be interested in finding out exactly what happens to the clothes you have so kindly donated to ROB. Clothing, bedding, blankets, shoes are being shipped out to small African villages in the Congo and Rwanda. Did you know that ‘our’ village in Congo is a mining town just like this area used to be? And in Rwanda the local community has suffered greatly over recent years with terrible massacres which left many families without their loved ones and also orphaned lots of young children. The community is building itself back up now and the clothes that we are sending out are much needed and appreciated. The projects we are in contact with employ local residents, mainly women. These African people have set up a warehouse where they sort through the clothing and sell it to the villagers at low cost. Trade is fair, as wages and clothing prices are all set by themselves. Some of the people employed mend clothing – a new zip here, some buttons there, shoes re-soled etc. Pieces of fabric are utilised for cloths or to make up a garment, nothing is wasted. We are ROB feel so pleased that the clothes we send out actually get worn.

Trip out to see textiles en route to Africa
Trip out to see textiles en route to Africa
Heavier blankets, coats and jumpers are being sent to another project in the ‘Eastern Block’, mainly Hungary. Once again this is a very poor part of the world where the local people have suffered much hardship and unrest. We are also sending your bric-a-brac out to Hungary and this has been received very well. We are told that small electrical items such as irons, hairdryers, radios, clocks etc, are greatly appreciated.

So have a good look amongst your possessions – do you really need all those clothes? When was the last time you wore that pair of trousers, does that dress still fit? De-clutter your rooms – you will feel better for a clear out!! Support ROB and help the staff and students here, and be rewarded by knowing your donations will be going to such a good cause. You will not only benefit your own local community but also other communities elsewhere in the world.

We gratefully accept the following items:
